ABSTRACT
This study aims to describe and analyze: 1) the background of Tirto Adhi Soerjo took a part actively in press, 2) the ways of Tirto Adhi Soerjo to manage the press, and 3) Tirto Adhi Soerjo’s contribution and participation in press world.
This study applied a history research method that belongs to five steps: finding topic, heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The approach that was used for this research was a political approach and written in a descriptive analysis.
The results of this study show that: 1) The background of Tirto Adhi Soerjo took a part actively in press world because he hated strata in “priyayi” and he wanted to educate his people fought against Dutch colonialism in order to make his people aware towards their nationalism. His cultural, social and educational background made him have a such characteristic. 2) The ways of Tirto carrying out the press is using the new method. Financially, he has a unique method and belongs to new method where he asks the costumers to pay it in advanced and the funds belong to company shares. From the contents point of view, he writes down all the things about life and knowledge and also the truth. From the function, Tirto uses his newspaper as a tool against the dominated people, and he also has a powerful method to find costumers. In carrying out this press, he also met some difficulties. 3) Tirto Adhi Soerjo succeeded in publishing Indonesian press. Tirto presented the first national newspaper named Medan Prijaji. Economically, Tirto has been successful in establishing a national corporation company; in social aspects, Tirto also supports women emancipation from his newspaper, helps the oppressed people, decides Melayu language used as a state language which finally becomes the Indonesian language. He also makes a friendship communication with Chinese people in the Netherlands Indies.
